The Short Answer

Up to 4,580 pounds. That is the most a 2027 Ram 2500 can carry, and it comes from a gas HEMI V8 truck ordered with Ram's new Payload Upgrade Package, which lifts maximum GVWR from 10,000 to 11,040 pounds. Choose the High-Output Cummins diesel instead and payload tops out at 3,600 pounds, because the heavier engine eats into the rating, but towing climbs to 20,000 pounds.

What Changes the Payload Number
Engine is the first fork. The standard 6.4L HEMI V8 leaves more of the GVWR for cargo; the Cummins diesel trades payload for torque and a 20,000-pound towing ceiling. The second fork is the Payload Upgrade Package itself, offered on gas trucks in Tradesman, Big Horn, Laramie, Limited and Limited Longhorn trim. It bundles a 3500-derived frame, upgraded leaf springs and an anti-spin rear differential, and it is what unlocks the 11,040-pound GVWR. Towing is a separate question with its own answer: the gas truck is rated up to 17,750 pounds and the diesel up to 20,000, properly equipped, and the package does not move either figure. The towing breakdown lays those out by engine.
What It Means for a Hyannis Work Truck
On Cape Cod the number that gets tested every weekday is usually payload, not towing. A landscaping crew working properties in Barnstable loads the bed with stone and mulch; a Falmouth builder carries lumber, tools and a generator; and when a nor'easter rolls in, plow trucks run Route 6 carrying salt, sand and a mounted blade. All of that weight sits on the frame, so the extra headroom the package adds is margin you use daily.
