2026 Jeep Gladiator Off-Road Capability

Dana 44 solid axles and steel skid plates on every trim, up to 11.6 inches of ground clearance on the Mojave, 31.5 inches of water fording, and 33-inch all-terrain tires standard on Rubicon or Mojave. Around here the first specification is not clearance. It is the permit.

Most off-road pages start with angles. On a sandbar, the honest order is different. Every stretch of local sand worth driving is gated by a sticker, a seasonal nesting closure and a tire-pressure rule, so legal access is the first specification and ground clearance is the second. What follows is the hardware Jeep actually publishes, then the rules that decide whether you can use it.

For prices by trim see trims compared; the measurement tables are on the specifications page.

Off-Road Hardware by Trim

A lot of the Gladiator's capability is standard equipment rather than a trim upgrade, which is unusual. Every trim, from the $39,820 Sport up, gets the same axles and the same underbody protection.

The two branches diverge from there. Rubicon is the low-speed, technical build: front and rear locking differentials standard, 33-inch LT285/70R17 all-terrain tires, a 64.4-inch track. Mojave is the opposite discipline, with a reinforced frame, strengthened iron steering knuckles and enhanced suspension, which Jeep says makes it the only Jeep vehicle to earn the Desert Rated badge. It runs the widest track in the lineup at 65 inches.

One thing we will not tell you is which marketing name your transfer case carries. Jeep's own specification pages list the hardware as part-time four-wheel drive and print no system name against any trim, so the names you see quoted elsewhere are not something we can attach to a specific truck. Ask us and we will read it off the build sheet.

Ground Clearance and Angles by Trim

Here is where we are going to be less precise than most pages you will read, and on purpose. Individual trim sheets from Jeep list neither clearance nor angles. What follows is only what the company actually puts in print; anything more granular than this is not something we can stand behind.

On the ground that matters here, none of these is the limiting factor anyway. Soft sand does not care about a departure angle. It cares about flotation, which means tire pressure, and about momentum, which means gearing and a driver who does not stop on the soft stuff.

Tires and Wheels for the Trail

If you are buying this truck to drive on sand, tires are the single highest-value decision on the page, and the step from the Sport's all-season rubber to the Willys' all-terrains does more for you than any other four thousand dollars in the lineup. A full-size spare rides underneath on every trim, which matters more than it sounds when the nearest tire shop is a bridge away.

Water Fording and Underbody Protection

Jeep rates the Gladiator's front seats to withstand up to 31.5 inches of water fording. That figure gets quoted a lot in a river-crossing context, but its practical value here is more mundane and more common: a flooded low spot on a beach access road after a storm tide, or the last few feet of a launch ramp at high water.

Steel skid plates protect the undercarriage on every trim, along with the off-road hardware underneath. Two notes that matter in a salt environment rather than a desert one. Fording salt water is harder on a vehicle than fording fresh, so a rinse afterward is not optional maintenance, it is the maintenance. And if you regularly run in water or soft sand, Jeep's own severe-duty schedule applies to you: axle fluid at 40,000, 80,000 and 120,000 miles rather than the normal cadence. The maintenance page has both schedules.

Trail Tech

Two available systems are worth understanding before you order, because they do different jobs.

TrailCam Off-Road Camera. Jeep describes it as giving an on-screen look at obstacles and trail changes ahead of you. On a rock ledge that is about placement. On a rutted, washed-out sand road it is about seeing the hole you are about to drop a front wheel into, which is the more common use here.

Off-Road+. Jeep describes it as optimizing throttle, transmission shift points and traction control during slow crawls on rocks or speedy passes on sand. That second half is the relevant one on a peninsula: it is the setting that keeps the truck from cutting power exactly when you need momentum to stay on top of soft sand.

Both feed the standard 12.3-inch Uconnect 5 touchscreen, which is standard on every trim.

Where to Wheel Near Cape Cod

This is the section that matters most locally, and it is mostly about paperwork. There is no open, unrestricted off-road driving here. Every legal option is permit-controlled, seasonally closed for shorebird nesting, and subject to tire-pressure rules. Driving on a beach without the right sticker is an expensive mistake and a genuine conservation problem.

Sandy Neck Beach, Barnstable. You need the town's off-road vehicle sticker before the sand is legal to you. Nesting closures come and go through the season and they move, so whatever the posted rule says on the morning you arrive is the rule.

Cape Cod National Seashore oversand routes, Provincetown. The Race Point and Province Lands corridors are National Park Service territory. They require an NPS oversand permit, issued seasonally, in self-contained and standard categories, with four-wheel drive and tire-deflation requirements attached.

Neither is a trail in the western sense. Both are soft-sand corridors where the correct technique is low tire pressure, steady momentum and four-wheel drive engaged before you need it, not after. Every Gladiator has the drivetrain for it. What separates the trims is tires, and what separates a good day from a recovery is the pressure gauge in your glovebox.

Deflating properly means you need to reinflate before you get back on the road, so plan for that too. Our service department sees the results of skipping that step often enough to mention it.

2026 Jeep Gladiator Mojave on soft sand

Off-Road FAQs

Can I drive a Gladiator on the beach on Cape Cod?

Only with the right permit, in the right season, on a route that allows it. Sandy Neck requires a town of Barnstable off-road vehicle sticker; the Cape Cod National Seashore oversand routes require a National Park Service permit. Both carry four-wheel-drive and tire-deflation requirements and both close seasonally for shorebird nesting.

What is the ground clearance of a 2026 Gladiator?

10.0 inches on the Sport, and up to 11.6 inches on the Mojave, which Jeep calls the highest of any Gladiator. Clearance never appears on those individual trim sheets, so no per-trim number is quoted here. Bring us the stock number and we will settle it against that truck.

Do I need a Rubicon to drive on sand?

No. Sand rewards tires and tire pressure far more than it rewards lockers. A Willys with its all-terrain tires handles permit-legal oversand well, and every Gladiator has four-wheel drive as standard. The Rubicon's lockers earn their money on rock and deep ruts, not on a beach.

How deep can a Gladiator ford?

Jeep rates the front seats to withstand up to 31.5 inches of water fording. In salt water, rinse the undercarriage afterward, and if you do it regularly, follow the severe-duty service schedule rather than the normal one.

What is the difference between Trail Rated and Desert Rated?

Trail Rated is the badge the Gladiator carries, earned through a series of off-road trials. Desert Rated is specific to the Mojave, which Jeep says is the only Jeep vehicle to earn it, on the strength of a reinforced frame, strengthened iron steering knuckles and enhanced suspension aimed at higher-speed sand running.

Does every Gladiator have skid plates and tow hooks?

Yes. Steel skid plates, heavy-duty Dana 44 solid front and rear axles, and forged tow hooks, two in front and one at the rear, are standard on every trim including the base Sport. That is unusual, and it is a large part of why the cheapest Gladiator is still a genuinely capable truck.
