It shares its platform, engines and technology with the two-row Grand Cherokee but rides on a 121.7-inch wheelbase, stretches to 204.9 inches long, and adds a third row that folds flat for cargo when you do not need the seats. The result is a three-row Jeep that still drives like a Grand Cherokee and still parks in a normal Plymouth driveway.

The L is the size-up variant, and the differences are all about space. It is 11.4 inches longer overall and rides on a wheelbase five inches longer than the two-row model, which is what creates room for the third row. It seats six as standard with second-row captain's chairs and up to seven with the no-cost second-row bench. Behind that third row sits 17.2 cubic feet of cargo, and folding the rear rows opens up to 84.6 cubic feet, versus 70.8 in the two-row. Jeep also gives the L three-zone climate control as standard, available quad-zone climate, an available Interior FamCAM camera that shows the second and third rows on the touchscreen, and an available power-folding third row. The 293-horsepower, 260-lb-ft V6 runs on regular 87 octane and returns EPA estimates near 18/25/21 mpg in four-wheel-drive form, about one mpg below the shorter two-row model because of the L's added length and weight. EPA ratings are published at fueleconomy.gov.
The 324-horsepower, 332-lb-ft Hurricane turbo four is standard from the Laredo Altitude up through the Summit and returns roughly 20/25/22 mpg. Both engines use an eight-speed automatic. Rear-wheel drive is standard on the lower trims with four-wheel drive about a $2,000 option, and the Limited Reserve, Summit and 85th Anniversary Edition are 4x4 standard. The L carries the same 4x4 hardware as the standard Grand Cherokee: Quadra-Trac I and available Quadra-Drive II four-wheel-drive systems, the five-mode Selec-Terrain traction system, and an available Quadra-Lift air suspension that raises the body for clearance and lowers it on the highway. Ground clearance runs 8.5 inches, a tenth more than the two-row. Standard 18-inch wheels move up to available 20s. Properly equipped, the L tows up to 6,200 pounds with either engine, and its longer body carries a higher payload rating of up to 1,370 pounds, making it the better hauler of the two when a full third row of passengers plus gear is the job. Ride quality over the Sagamore Bridge benefits from the longer wheelbase.
The Grand Cherokee L starts around $40,920 for the Laredo and runs to roughly $62,600 for the Summit, typically about $2,000 above the equivalent two-row trim.
