Drive goes through a continuously variable transaxle to Jeep Active Drive I four-wheel drive with a rear-axle disconnect.
This is a self-charging hybrid. There is nothing to plug in and no charging routine to learn: the system recovers energy under braking and coasting and manages the rest itself. That matters on a peninsula where the same vehicle crawls through summer traffic at the canal crossings and then runs the length of the Cape in an empty February. Stop-and-go is where the electric side does most of the work, and open highway is where the turbo four takes over.
Four-wheel drive is standard equipment here, not a box to tick. The rear-axle disconnect drops the rear driveline out of the loop when the traction is not needed, which is where a meaningful part of the fuel-economy figure comes from, and re-engages it when it is. Select-Terrain gives four driving modes, Auto, Sport, Snow and Sand/Mud, and the Snow mode is the one that matters on an unplowed side road in a nor'easter.

The screens are standard, not a step-up. Every 2026 Cherokee gets a 12.3-inch Uconnect 5 touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay support and Android Auto compatibility, and a 10.25-inch full-color digital instrument cluster in front of the driver. A passive entry system and rain-sensing wipers are standard as well, and a rotary gear selector clears the console for the things that actually live there.
Connected services come as Stellantis' Connect One package on every trim, bundling a ten-year over-the-air update trial, the Jeep brand smartphone app for vehicle functions, and automatic SOS calls. Available upgrades include a dual-pane panoramic sunroof, a hands-free power liftgate with adjustable height, a 360-degree surround-view camera, a digital rearview mirror, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a windshield wiper de-icer, premium audio and the Alexa in-vehicle assistant. Five seats in two rows, and the second row is a 60/40 split-folding bench. Front-seat room measures 40.3 inches of head room, 41.3 inches of leg room and 57.7 inches of shoulder room; the second row runs 40.2, 38.5 and 57.6. That rear head-room figure sits unusually close to the front, which is the practical reading of Jeep's decision to make this Cherokee taller and squarer than the one it replaces.
Jeep describes the cabin as a deliberate move upmarket for the segment, with a unique perforation pattern on the Overland, non-leather material options and recycled content in the floor carpets. On an Overland, note that the standard panoramic sunroof takes front head room down to 38.0 inches. Worth a sit if you are tall and the sunroof is the reason you are looking at that trim.
There is 33.6 cubic feet back there, rising to 68.3 once the bench goes down. Jeep puts the gain against the previous Cherokee at about 30 percent more cargo behind the second row, and the shape of that space is the part that shows up on a Saturday, because everything that comes home here comes home wet, sandy and heavier than it left.
Towing is rated at up to 3,500 pounds on a conventional hitch, properly equipped, with a 350-pound maximum tongue weight and an 8,400-pound gross combined weight rating on the single 1.6L hybrid configuration. Jeep calls the figure unsurpassed in class. The rating does not change by trim, so a base Cherokee with the tow group pulls what an Overland pulls. On that same conventional-hitch, properly-equipped basis, Jeep asks for trailer brakes above 1,000 pounds of loaded trailer weight, and on that same properly-equipped basis requires them above 2,000 pounds. The owner's manual also asks you to keep a trailer off the hitch for the first 500 miles, then hold to 50 mph for the first 500 towing miles. One more line from that manual matters at a tidal ramp: disconnect the trailer wiring connector before the boat goes in the water and reconnect once you are clear of it. Ground clearance is 8.0 inches. Approach and departure angles are 19.6 and 29.4 degrees and a breakover angle of 18.8 degrees, and calls the approach and departure figures best in class. Read together with the standard 4x4 system and the Sand/Mud mode, that is a vehicle sized for a rutted sand access road, a plowed-in driveway and a washed-out dirt lane at the far end of a rail-trail parking area.
Worth being clear about what that means locally: the oversand beaches people actually want to drive here are permit-only, they close seasonally for shorebird nesting, and they carry tire-deflation rules. Capability is the second question on that ground; the sticker is the first. If a transfer case with low range is what you are after, that conversation ends at the Wrangler rather than here.
Sea fog arrives here without warning, the two-lane roads go dark once the season ends, and the approach to a canal bridge can stop dead in front of you. Those are the conditions that decide whether a driver-assistance list is a feature sheet or a daily habit, and the useful thing about this vehicle is that you do not have to buy up the range to get one. Active Driving Assist, a Level 2 system pairing lane centering with adaptive cruise, is standard on the $36,995 trim. So is automatic emergency braking that identifies pedestrians and cyclists, which is the feature that matters most in summer traffic. So is blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-path detection, intersection collision assist, drowsy driver detection, and rear park assist with rear automatic braking behind it.
